Link existing eBay listings to Shopify without republishing your catalog

If the same products already exist on eBay and Shopify, start by matching the existing records. Publishing the Shopify catalog again can leave you with a second listing for an item you already sell.

First, choose the right starting point

  • Products exist on both platforms: prepare a mapping between your existing eBay listings and Shopify variants.
  • Products exist only on eBay: establish the Shopify catalog first. Shopify documents CSV and app-based migration options, followed by linking for continued selling. Its Store Migration app creates drafts; the eBay CSV does not include images or descriptions. Inspect what arrived before treating the catalog as complete. Shopify’s eBay migration guidance.
  • Products exist only on Shopify: you need a new-listing workflow. Return to our integration and migration guide to compare the jobs involved.

Make a small mapping sheet before approving matches

Start with a few representative products. Record the eBay item ID, Shopify product and variant IDs, SKU, condition, size or color, stock location, and current quantity. Add a column for who reviewed the match.

Example: a blue shirt in size medium and a blue shirt in size large can have nearly identical titles. A suggested title match is a reason to inspect the variant, not a reason to approve the whole group. Used and new versions of the same model also need separate attention.

Flag missing or reused identifiers before proceeding. Keep a copy of current listing content, prices, shipping and return settings. An export may omit fields; check its contents rather than assuming it is a complete backup.

Shopify says Marketplace Connect suggests matches using SKU, UPC or title; unmatched items can be selected manually. In the app, open Listings, select eBay, then Link listings. Review the suggested or manually chosen products, use Review matches, and confirm only the pairs you have checked.

Linking is consequential: Shopify says it starts inventory and order synchronization for linked listings. Plan your stock ownership and any old connector’s writes before confirming.

The eBay linking flow also asks which rules to retain for shipping, returns, title, description, and price/taxes. Keeping eBay settings preserves those current choices. Choosing Marketplace Connect settings replaces them; Shopify warns the original settings cannot be restored through that selection. Save the information you need first. When listings are missing or the match count looks wrong

Check the account, marketplace and current listing records before recreating anything. Separate three questions: is the item visible to the connector, is it mapped to the intended variant, and is the mapped item synchronizing correctly?

Historical seller discussions illustrate why this matters. One seller reported zero matches despite ongoing synchronization; another saw only one of fifteen existing listings available to match. These are individual reports, not evidence of a current widespread fault or a universal fix. They support checking the actual records instead of treating a count as the whole diagnosis. If an expected listing remains missing, use the connector’s support route with the relevant item ID, variant ID, marketplace and timestamp. Redact customer information and never send passwords. Do not publish a replacement merely to make a matching screen look complete.

Check images and inventory rules separately

Shopify documents separate image-sync controls in the bulk editor. It also provides listing defaults for inventory adjustments, including buffers and maximum quantities. Those defaults apply to future listings, not existing ones, so changing a default does not establish how an already-linked listing behaves. Inspect the individual settings and actual eBay record. Official eBay settings guidance.

A buffer is a risk-control choice, not proof that two channels can never oversell. For one-of-a-kind inventory, decide whether simultaneous availability is acceptable before enabling it.

Run a supervised pilot before expanding

  1. Confirm the eBay item ID still points to the intended item and the Shopify variant is correct.
  2. Compare quantities at the intended inventory location and record how long an authorized stock change takes to appear.
  3. Inspect price, currency, condition, images, shipping and return policy after linking.
  4. Check legitimate incoming orders for duplication and correct item mapping. Do not manufacture marketplace sales or feedback.
  5. Document who handles errors, how to pause writes, and what must be reconciled before restoring an old connector.

Keep one intended writer for each synchronized field. Expand in small batches only after the results meet your own recorded requirements.

If a duplicate listing already exists

Pause further publishing and identify which records have orders or active commitments before changing them. eBay generally prohibits multiple simultaneous fixed-price listings for an identical item from the same seller, with specific exceptions. Review the actual listing type and policy rather than assuming duplicate publication is harmless. eBay duplicate-listings policy.
